Groups.io: Changelog
October 23, 2026
Public Pages & Help
- CHANGE: The weekly #changelog email is now organized by area instead of by day, with the busiest areas first. It starts with the week's highlights and a list of the areas that changed, so you can skip to the ones you care about. Changes to our internal systems are no longer included.
- CHANGE: In the help center, a glossary definition opened by clicking an underlined term stayed open until you clicked the same term again, so several could pile up on top of each other. Definitions now close when you click anywhere else on the page, press Escape, or open another term. Clicking inside a definition keeps it open so you can select and copy its text. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41470
- CHANGE: Changes on the Changelog page from late August to mid October now have areas and weekly highlights too, so they can also be filtered by area.
- BUGFIX: On the Changelog page, a change that contained a link was cut off where the link began, so the announcement of the Security page read just "A new". Changes with a list of details, such as the event page redesign, showed only their first line. Both are now shown in full, and code, bold text and links in a change are now formatted instead of shown as raw Markdown.
- BUGFIX: Links in the changelog's RSS feed pointed to a place on the Changelog page that didn't exist. They now go to that day's changes. The feed can now also be filtered the same way as the page, for example to just API changes, and each item's title includes its area. Asking for a page of the feed past its end caused a server error; it now returns an empty feed.
- BUGFIX: In dark mode, the small arrow under a help center glossary definition was a different shade from the definition box. It now matches.

Highlights
- Ask now reads the discussion around each message it finds, cites its sources with verified numbered links, and fixes several cases where answers were cut short or failed.
- Members you check on the Members page now stay checked after using an action, sorting, or changing pages, and the same holds on View RSVPs.
- Moderators can add a moderator note to many members at once, and moderator notes are now hidden from members who are not allowed to read them.
- HEIC photos can now be uploaded to Photos albums and dropped into the message editor.
- Replies sent to the moderators from the website now reach them, and replies to a sender keep the Private: prefix and no longer duplicate the subject tag.
Messages & Topics
- API BUGFIX: Polls created with
/newpollwere never attached to a topic: the response had amsg_numof 0, and the poll showed as deleted on the website./newpollnow posts the poll to the group as a new topic and returns it with itsmsg_num. - API BUGFIX:
/updatepollfailed instead of updating the poll. It now updates the poll and edits its topic. - API BUGFIX: When posting a poll failed because it was too big, was sent to an announcement-only group by a non-moderator, or had a bad attachment,
/newpolland/updatepollreturned the error followed by the poll in the same response. They now return just the error. - API CHANGE: Removed the
announceparameter from the/newpolland/updatepolldocumentation. It was never used; polls are always posted to the group as a topic. Callers that still send it are unaffected. - INTERNAL: dbfetch can now look up polls by ID, group, or user, including polls that were never attached to a message.
- CHANGE: On the single-message page, the topic subject was a lower-level heading than the messages under it. It is now a level 2 heading, as on the topic page. Each message's heading for screen readers is now just the sender's name, without "Message from" and the date, which is read right after it. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41398
- BUGFIX: In the Verify Merge window, if the subject of the topic you were merging into contained a double quote, the subject was cut off at the quote and replaced with a backslash. Single quotes were shown as
\u0027. Subjects are now shown exactly as written. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41392 - CHANGE: The Yes button in the Verify Merge window now uses the same checkmark icon as other confirmation buttons. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41403
- CHANGE: The Mute button on topic and message pages was orange, so it looked like the topic had already been muted. Mute, Unmute, Follow, and Unfollow are now plain grey buttons. When a topic is muted or followed, a Muted or Followed badge now appears next to the button, so you can tell the current state at a glance. The same applies to the Mute, Unmute, Follow, Unfollow, Mute/Notify, and Follow/Notify buttons for hashtags on the hashtag search results and the Hashtags list. The Edit button for hashtag owners on the hashtag search results, which was also orange, is now blue, like the Edit Tag button on the Hashtags list. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41413
- BUGFIX: Messages written in Markdown on the website looked different in the group's archive than in the editor's preview. Headings, lists, and paragraphs had extra blank lines between them, so the message looked spread out. The same happened on the Pending Messages page when moderators reviewed a Markdown message. Markdown messages now look the same as in the preview.
Editor & Drafts
- CHANGE: When you replied to the sender of a message on the website, you could delete Private: from the subject, and the reply would arrive looking like a group message. Replies sent only to the sender now always start with Private:, and it's put back if you delete it. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41425
- BUGFIX: When you replied to the sender of a message, the group's subject tag was always added to the subject, even if it was already there, so it could appear twice. It was also added in the wrong place if Private: or Re: weren't typed exactly that way. The tag, Private: and Re: now each appear only once, in that order. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41425
- API BUGFIX: The same fixes apply to replies sent to the sender with
/postdraft. - BUGFIX: Dragging a HEIC photo into the message editor showed "Dropped file type is not supported". HEIC and HEIF photos dropped into the editor are now converted to JPEG and inserted where you drop them. HEIF files attached to a message from the website are now also converted to JPEG, like HEIC files. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41433
